disasters: natural and unnatural

Another natural disaster has had its way with my community.  Thanks a lot, Rūaumoko.

So I’m gonna share this excellent resource again – the Open Letter to the carers of  Infant/Toddlers.  The mums and dads and others looking after the small humans.  It was produced by IMHAANZ (the Infant Mental Health Association of Aotearoa/New Zealand).  There is another, equally awesome, on their website.  It deals with sleep and it is here.

We will be well advised to learn how to respond intelligently to trauma.  If in doubt, check back with Bruce Perry and the Child Trauma Academy.

And do some yoga.  After all, the body keeps the score.

  1. Hi Miriam,

I have been an avid follower of your blog over the years…all beginning many years ago when I rolled up to a PD session as a bright eyed beginning teacher, little did I know that the presentation by you and Nathan as part of brainwave trust would be a game changer!!!! fast forward many years later and I am still a regular reader of your blog, listener of your talking at presentations and reader of anything I can find!!! I now also have the privilege of seeing a dream come to fruition in the last year of opening my own preschool in my own community of Cust -COOL!!!! Our teaching team and anyone who will listen often refer to your fabulous reading about school readiness you had published in Oh baby….is there anyway that you would be happy for us to include this in our thinking and children’s portfolios for parents???
looking forward to hearing from you, amy blatch

    • Kia Ora Amy, thank you for your kind words … what a joy to have you doing beautiful work for families in our neighbourhood. I have forwarded your request to the editor of the magazine: they have a policy of waiting for 12 months after publication date before they make articles available one at a time. That School Readiness piece has been an amazing catalyst for conversation and professional development, so I’m stoked that you’ve also found it useful. I’ll letcha know when I find out whether we can share it yet, in this format, or not! ALSO: have you connected with the North Canterbury Early Years Group? New Entrant teachers and early childhood teachers all connecting once a term and having courageous conversations, it’s amazing. Contact Melinda @ Bush St or Ross @ New Life to find out more! x x xx

  2. I LOVE YOU MIRIAM!……. I have been trying to find you.

Well…. today I had appointments at hospital for my young 9 year old Bryn. Nothing major…. he is tube fed…. so every now and then they love to do bloods and injections which cause him a great deal of anxiety and stress. Anyway…… I picked up the Tots and Toddlers magazine because there was nothing else that looked any good. Voila…. there you were! Your beautiful, intelligent and funny words. I laughed out loud with joy.I felt very proud Mim.
Please get in touch if you can. I would dearly love to catch up. Also, very happy to hear that you have another wee girl! xxxx
