From NZ, now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensiblescreenuse.org\/recommendations\">a summary of research that led to some recommendations<\/a> for classrooms. Thanks, Sensible Screen Use!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(I<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohbaby.co.nz\/under-5\/school-days\/is-your-child-really-ready-for-school\" target=\"_blank\"> wrote this piece a few years back: for OHbaby! about school readiness<\/a> &#8230; might have to pitch another one with an emphasis on countering the over-technification of too many of our classrooms!)\u00a0 I would begin by sharing the <a href=\"https:\/\/commercialfreechildhood.org\/pf\/screens-in-schools-action-kit\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=2c61cf35-c4db-4c96-8f3f-ec84544944e0\" target=\"_blank\">NEW ACTION KIT from the Children&#8217;s Screen Time Action Network.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Outside the classroom: <a href=\"https:\/\/boston.cbslocal.com\/2020\/01\/22\/look-up-challenge-kids-cell-phones-initiative-mcglynn-middle-school\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=170a1979-2dd6-48c2-978c-6e228825707d\">here&#8217;s a write up of an initiative to get kids to put down their phones<\/a>, and here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lookup.live\/\" target=\"_blank\">link to that initiative (&#8220;Look Up&#8221;)<\/a>. Kids can function just fine without phones, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/29\/well\/family\/smartphones-tweens-getting-lost.html?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=170a1979-2dd6-48c2-978c-6e228825707d\" target=\"_blank\">enjoy this story from the NY Times as evidence!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We do need to be a little more nuanced in our thinking about all this &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-00032-5?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=70a91fbc-1f17-4ed8-b353-0d3d9a47a00a\" target=\"_blank\">the Human Screenome Project is one interesting example.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From a speech language perspective, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prweb.com\/releases\/new_baby_in_the_new_year_parents_to_be_should_consider_how_their_child_will_be_raised_with_tech\/prweb16869550.htm?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=170a1979-2dd6-48c2-978c-6e228825707d\" target=\"_blank\">this is for parents about their own tech use<\/a>, and this is about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesector.com.au\/2020\/02\/10\/no-app-can-replace-a-lap-why-experts-are-concerned-about-the-rise-of-digital-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\">the need for sharing books with babies<\/a> &#8230; books made of paper, not digital ones.<\/p>\n<p>Children in NZ also need us to pay attention to the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noted.co.nz\/currently\/currently-currently\/poverty-new-zealand-kete-half-empty\" target=\"_blank\">so many of them are living in poverty,\u00a0<\/a>they need our support in<a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/ecopsychology-how-immersion-in-nature-benefits-your-health?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=70a91fbc-1f17-4ed8-b353-0d3d9a47a00a\" target=\"_blank\"> getting outdoors and being a little free range,\u00a0<\/a>and l<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainwave.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/Supporting-children-social-and-emotional-development_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">et&#8217;s not forget the emotional development<\/a>\u00a0or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantamagazine.org\/glial-brain-cells-long-in-neurons-shadow-reveal-hidden-powers-20200127\/\" target=\"_blank\">magical glial cells!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, cos I gotta go drive a carload of kids to some swimming sports &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/kacey-musgraves-boy-smells-slow-burn-candle-collaboration?utm_campaign=442971_Kacey%20-%20Candle_247690_US&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=dotmailer&amp;dm_i=5B4A,9HSR,404GU8,ZQFO,1\" target=\"_blank\">I am coveting this<\/a>.\u00a0 Is that shallow or WHAT?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kia Ora e hoa ma, Many amazing things for you to read, coming right up.
