{"id":737,"date":"2019-06-24T12:43:39","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T00:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=737"},"modified":"2019-06-24T15:06:22","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T03:06:22","slug":"solstice-celebrated-garlic-planted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=737","title":{"rendered":"solstice celebrated, garlic planted!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kia Ora lovelies,<br \/>\nHow wonderful to have tipped over into shortening nights and lengthening days.\u00a0 It still may be flipping freezing, but I&#8217;m grateful for the reminder that all is impermanent.<\/p>\n<p>First link of the day: <a href=\"https:\/\/humanetech.com\/podcast\/\">&#8220;Your Undivided Attention&#8221; &#8230; it&#8217;s\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/humanetech.com\/podcast\/\">an excellent new podcast from the Center for Humane Tech.<\/a>\u00a0 It has me all a-flutter thinking about design solutions to support us mere humans in undoing the manipulation of our poor li&#8217;l vulnerable minds as we attempt to take control of our device use.<\/p>\n<p>Which we&#8217;d better get serious about: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usc.edu.au\/explore\/usc-news-exchange\/news-archive\/2019\/june\/tech-use-causing-horn-like-bone-growth-in-young-people\">lifetime users are changing their skeletons.\u00a0 Horn-like growths<\/a>\u00a0on our spines?\u00a0 Yeah, all this tech is not a benign habit.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/19\/technology\/youtube-child-privacy.html\"> Especially for kids<\/a>.\u00a0 Oh, and\u00a0\u00a0h<a href=\"https:\/\/neuro.hms.harvard.edu\/harvard-mahoney-neuroscience-institute\/brain-newsletter\/and-brain-series\/screen-time-and-brain\">ere&#8217;s what the Harvard Mahoney Neuroscience Institute reckon &#8230;<\/a>\u00a0Meanwhile,\u00a0closer to (my!) home, I was privileged to see a powerful talk about digital addiction by a wise professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.nz\/news\/2019\/child-well-being-symposium.html\">UC Child Wellbeing Symposium<\/a> a couple of weeks back.\u00a0 Koia kei a koe!<\/p>\n<p>Just quietly, I&#8217;d\u00a0 have liked other speakers to have <a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/essays\/we-are-more-than-our-brains-on-neuroscience-and-being-human\">considered the concepts of this essay<\/a>\u00a0&#8230; now, I&#8217;m a fool for some neuroscience, but let&#8217;s never forget that we are more than our brains&#8230; we are also sensory beings, feeling creatures: with <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1002\/dev.21869\">bodies and bellies<\/a> and reciprocal relationships.<\/p>\n<p>ANYWAY &#8230; More locals doing important work can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensiblescreenuse.org\/\">HERE, at the website of the Sensible Screen Use group<\/a>&#8230; they are all about shaking up the new normal that exists in so many classrooms in NZ.\u00a0 I wonder if they&#8217;ve read <a href=\"http:\/\/screenschooled.com\/\">Screen Schooled<\/a>?\u00a0 Other useful thoughts about shaking up the norm in classrooms can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/nz.educationhq.com\/news\/60538\/movers-shakers-policy-makers-dr-judy-willis-neurologist-author-speaker\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=EducationWeek%20New%20Zealand%20June%2021&amp;utm_content=EducationWeek%20New%20Zealand%20June%2021+CID_93f96e33622aaa0ab5e122ea814128e5&amp;utm_source=EducationHQ%20Campaigns&amp;utm_term=Movers%20Shakers%20%20Policy%20Makers%20-%20Dr%20Judy%20Willis%20neurologist%20author%20speaker\">here, in this write up of the work of a neurologist turned classroom teacher.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a lil&#8217; something about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychalive.org\/the-myth-of-a-perfect-mother\/?fbclid=IwAR3tFinGwn15yWSkYXA0rgVyJ5sY_w5re9JrYIlsJq6HKlXG0Vv0NXls2cw\">the myth of the perfect mother<\/a> (something <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohbaby.co.nz\/parenting\/parenting-tools-your-style-and-what-your-child-needs\/good-enough-parenting\/\">I&#8217;ve written about elsewhere &#8230;<\/a>) and this is from Rick Hansen (LOVE!), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rickhanson.net\/10-reasons-to-take-good-care-of-a-father\/\">it&#8217;s about taking care of dads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is an interesting finding about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennmedicine.org\/news\/news-releases\/2019\/may\/childhood-adversity-linked-to-earlier-puberty\">the link between adverse childhood experiences and the onset of puberty<\/a>, and I end with a glorious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cps.ca\/en\/documents\/position\/positive-parenting\">bit of counsel about having conversations about positive parenting<\/a>, it&#8217;s from the most excellent Canadian Paediatric Society.\u00a0 Merci!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kia Ora lovelies, How wonderful to have tipped over into shortening nights and lengthening days.\u00a0 It still may be flipping freezing, but I&#8217;m grateful for the reminder that all is impermanent.
