{"id":711,"date":"2019-04-02T11:57:57","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T23:57:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=711"},"modified":"2019-04-02T11:57:57","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T23:57:57","slug":"alrighty-then-back-to-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=711","title":{"rendered":"alrighty, then &#8230; back to work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This geek has had a crazy end to summer &amp; beginning of Autumn.\u00a0 A series of blessed distractions and beautiful messes.\u00a0 International family &#8230; travellers enriching my life (and borrowing my office space &#8230;) so I&#8217;ve been busy with tour guiding, housekeeping, translating.<\/p>\n<p>In so doing, I&#8217;ve had the great privilege of visiting corners of our lovely island that I had never seen before &#8230; like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiordland.org.nz\/about-fiordland\/fiordland-national-park\/\">Fiordland<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-L1GKiOQHu0\">Lee&#8217;s Valley <\/a>&#8230; and many other spots I know and love, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christchurchnz.com\/walk-canterbury\/castle-hill\/\">Castle Hill<\/a> (which is sooooo much busier these days!).<\/p>\n<p>So the joy has been forthcoming, and the gratitude for the miraculous accident of being kiwi born.\u00a0 Hard on the heels of all that joy, however, sits<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theschooloflife.com\/thebookoflife\/the-true-cause-of-dread-and-anxiety\/\"> anxiety<\/a> (&#8220;I need to hit my desk!&#8221;) and her cousin, guilt (&#8220;I should be doing some reading\/note taking!&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>For now, I will clear off the tabs on my computer (OH! the things I long to share!) and I&#8217;ll ease back into the river &#8230; I&#8217;ve got 8 weeks to pull together a major bit of work, and then another 8 to pull together a couple more biggies.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll aim to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/mindfulnessmatters\/2012\/10\/integration-is-better-than-rigidity-or-chaos.html\">avoid the riverbanks of Chaos and Rigidity<\/a>, and strive to float down the middle, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BGYUbc73JwY\">Wellbeing flow, where all is Integrated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll remind myself that I am capable, and that I do actually enjoy this sorta shizz.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll also remind my ol&#8217; lady self (just had another birthday, watch me go!) that I AM THE BOSS OF ME &#8230; if this work gets the better of me, I have options!\u00a0 I&#8217;m not in prison!\u00a0 And if, periodically,\u00a0 it feels like I am &#8230; I will remind it&#8217;s a prison of my own making!<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;ll be grateful to share some links with some geeks &#8230; first up, <a href=\"https:\/\/childethics.com\/category\/forum\/\">I LOVE THIS.\u00a0 It&#8217;s from a site called Ethical Research Involving Children,<\/a> and it highlights a small but massively powerful change in seeking permission &#8230; check out this quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What is the change? Here is a typical statement in parental consent forms for children of all ages:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs parent or legal guardian, I authorize (child\u2019s name) to become a participant in the research study described in this form.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course many variations of this wording exist, but the bottom line is that parents are asked to consent for their child to participate in research.<\/p>\n<p>Try and use this instead:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs parent or legal guardian, I give permission to the research team to approach my child (name of the child) and ask if he\/she wishes to participate in your project.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Right on!\u00a0 A parent provides consent for a researcher to INVITE a child to participate.\u00a0 That is an important distinction.<\/p>\n<p>What else?\u00a0 Here is an amazing article from the deep thinkers at <a href=\"https:\/\/renegadeinc.com\/education-fourth-industrial-revolution\/\">Renegade Inc., this is about education and it is worth a read<\/a>.\u00a0 More on education, now &#8230;\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onbeing.org\/programs\/richard-davidson-a-neuroscientist-on-love-and-learning-feb2019\/\">Did I share this yet?\u00a0 It&#8217;s an episode of the On Being podcast<\/a>, in which neuroscientist Richard Davidson talks about the need to include kindness and practical love in classroom curricula.\u00a0 Speaking of classrooms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/news\/2018\/oct\/youngest-class-more-likely-be-diagnosed-adhd\">watch out that the youngest kids aren&#8217;t disproportionately being labeled as pathologically flawed just cos they&#8217;re young<\/a> (so said research from the University College London),\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5872001\/Could-wifi-giving-children-cancer.html\">here&#8217;s something new to worry about (Wifi and cancer <\/a>&#8230; oh dear) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/26\/style\/digital-divide-screens-schools.html?action=click&amp;module=RelatedLinks&amp;pgtype=Article\">here is a piece from the New York Times about the digital divide and how it&#8217;s not what we expected<\/a>: these days, affluent parents are keeping kids off screens.\u00a0 Meanwhile,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/23\/sunday-review\/human-contact-luxury-screens.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share\">this article, also from NY Times, takes the idea further &#8230; Human Contact is Now a Luxury Good<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s that?\u00a0 We social mammals need social connection?\u00a0 Ya don&#8217;t say!!<\/p>\n<p>A wee bit more tech stuff, t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/europe\/mobile-phones-have-ruined-our-ability-to-think-straight-20180305-p4z2th.html\">his is about how difficult it can be to think straight with the many interruptions of a phone <\/a>(BTW how do I make my laptop stop telling me when my phone receives an imessage?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to know!!) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theschooloflife.com\/thebookoflife\/how-to-live-more-wisely-around-our-phones\/\">here the good folk at the School of Life tell us how to live more wisely around our tech<\/a>.\u00a0 Listen, if those of us who are fully grown are struggling with all this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/mental-wealth\/201508\/screentime-is-making-kids-moody-crazy-and-lazy\">we owe it to the small people to help them stay offline, and sane<\/a>.\u00a0 As it is, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-internet-knows-you-better-than-your-spouse-does\/\">the internet knows you better than your spouse does<\/a> (so said Scientific American!), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.degeneratemillennials.com\/study-suggests-instagram-users-are-utterly-miserable\/\">instagram makes you miserable<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/d1qmdf3vop2l07.cloudfront.net\/eggplant-cherry.cloudvent.net\/compressed\/bb24215ada7264f0db4b3a0060e755b1.pdf\">we are all fighting the tide of Persuasive Design<\/a>!!<\/p>\n<p>(oooh, in unrelated news &#8230;
