{"id":703,"date":"2019-02-25T12:51:03","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T00:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=703"},"modified":"2019-02-25T12:59:28","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T00:59:28","slug":"many-links-to-enjoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=703","title":{"rendered":"many links to &#8230; enjoy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As is oft the case, my geeky brothers &amp; sisters, a great many of the things I&#8217;m about to share with you might not exactly be *enjoyable*.\u00a0 But mate, they are important nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>So while the clock&#8217;s tickin&#8217; and time&#8217;s a-wasting, I&#8217;ll just commence the link dump, shall I?<\/p>\n<p>First, <a href=\"https:\/\/unconditionallearning.org\/2018\/01\/15\/what-can-one-teacher-really-do-about-trauma\/\">a really useful piece about being trauma informed <\/a>\u00a0in the classroom, and while we&#8217;re in the classroom,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/mindshift\/52854\/how-self-compassion-supports-academic-motivation-and-emotional-wellness\"> here is a lovely li&#8217;l something about the role of self-compassion<\/a> in academic performance.\u00a0 Important, because <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/observations\/the-emotional-toll-of-graduate-school\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=weekly-review&amp;utm_content=link&amp;utm_term=2019-02-06_featured-this-week\">look how harrowing grad school can be<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few more screen-y links: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvnz.co.nz\/one-news\/world\/new-report-raises-concerns-children-choosing-electronic-devices-over-socialising-friends?variant=tb_v_1\">here is something about the risks of choosing electronic socialisation<\/a> over the kanohi ki te kanohi, face to face type, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2019\/feb\/07\/children-parents-screen-time-electronic-devices-bedrooms-uk-medical-officers?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=7bce178c-b833-44ed-8d5c-d5d67f34da4d\">the Guardian reminds parents not to let children take screens into bedrooms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of research articles to seek out: <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/article-abstract\/2722666\">this one carves a line between screen time and developmental screening scores<\/a>, (which is problematic: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/screen-time-children-phone-tablet-ipad-mobile-tv-digital-a8786096.html?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=7bce178c-b833-44ed-8d5c-d5d67f34da4d\">check out THIS <\/a>\u00a0from the Independent pointing to how much more time the littles are spending on screens than they did even 15 or so years ago) &#8230; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28952333\">this work points out how screen use during daily routines is contributing to social-emotional delays<\/a>.\u00a0 As a counter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainwave.org.nz\/rethinking-the-nappy\/\">you might LEAN IN to the routines, thusly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reasons to resist, continued!\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PMotykw0SIk\">In this interview,<\/a>\u00a0 Chamath Palihapitiya (a former Facebook exec) says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8220;I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.
