{"id":693,"date":"2019-01-21T09:36:17","date_gmt":"2019-01-20T21:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=693"},"modified":"2019-01-21T09:48:05","modified_gmt":"2019-01-20T21:48:05","slug":"pride-its-what-comes-before-a-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=693","title":{"rendered":"staring out of windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kia Ora my friends, colleagues, geeky brothers &amp; sisters<\/p>\n<p>Summer is whipping past with the speed of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzgeo.com\/stories\/the-canterbury-norwester\/\">a nor&#8217;west wind<\/a>\u00a0and I am finally ready to begin list-writing and the wrangling of ducks into rows as I contemplate my action-packed 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Even as most of NZ has attempted varying degrees of summer holiday, there have been a great many things written, published, and shared.\u00a0 I will pass some along now!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll begin with a link to the <a href=\"https:\/\/screentimenetwork.org\/resource\/disrupting-progression-early-screen-use-screen-addiction?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=b394d034-71a6-42ee-a61e-7d615b7b3171\">most recent webinar from the Children&#8217;s Screen Time Action Network<\/a>, and here is a li&#8217;l something from The Conversation, of Australia.\u00a0 These are some <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/three-things-we-can-all-learn-from-people-who-dont-use-smartphones-or-social-media-103468\">lessons from people who don&#8217;t use social media<\/a>, and this NY Times piece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/31\/opinion\/smartphones-screen-time.html\">wonders what we could do with the found hours<\/a> and energy that would emerge if we put our phones down for a year.<\/p>\n<p>This makes me suspicious: it&#8217;s about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2019\/01\/15\/why-us-classrooms-are-starting-to_ap.html?cmp=eml-enl-tl-news1&amp;M=58725231&amp;U=1497531&amp;UUID=3d21351f9bd8a48fbe5eeee0c271a654&amp;eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=b394d034-71a6-42ee-a61e-7d615b7b3171\">the gamification of classrooms<\/a>, and t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-46758809?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=d3a369b1-2861-425c-8339-576d965c6f67\">his piece from the BBC <\/a>\u00a0speaks to parents&#8217; frustrations at the lack of &#8216;official&#8217; guidelines for kids&#8217; screen use.\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2018\/nov\/06\/children-urged-play-outdoors-cut-risk-shortsightedness\">Send the kids outside to play!\u00a0 It&#8217;s important for their eye health<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll change gears for a few links now, because I do geek out about a range of stuff, not just the screen dramas.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/thespoke.earlychildhoodaustralia.org.au\/music-and-inclusion\/\">Here is a link from Early Childhood Australia<\/a> about the value of music in children&#8217;s lives, t<a href=\"https:\/\/hms.harvard.edu\/news\/zip-code-or-genetic-code?utm_source=Silverpop&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=field_news_item_1&amp;utm_content=HMNews01142019\">his is a report from Harvard about an amazing study<\/a> that uses a massive data set to attempt to tease out the impact of nature\/nurture (&#8220;gene code or zip code&#8221;) on various diseases, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amightygirl.com\/blog?p=21631&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=20190111&amp;ts=20190111\">THIS!\u00a0 Yes, this is important.\u00a0 From The good folk at A Mighty Girl, about the folly of &#8220;he&#8217;s mean because he likes you&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a country girl and a lifelong wool fanatic (ain&#8217;t lying!) I was STOKED to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralnewsgroup.co.nz\/rural-news\/rural-general-news\/world-s-first-woollen-surf-board\">read about this innovative use of a renewable resource.<\/a>\u00a0 Oh, listen &#8230; full disclosure &#8230; I have been <a href=\"https:\/\/jackedonthebeanstalk.com\/blogs\/health-nutrition\/the-best-damn-tofu-scramble-this-worlds-ever-known\">enjoying a vegan diet <\/a>\u00a0for a couple of months now, but clearly this does not actually make me a vegan.\u00a0 My love for wool is <em>even greater<\/em> than my love for eating a plant-based diet.\u00a0 SORRY.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a piece from the <a href=\"http:\/\/evolutionaryparenting.com\/why-punishment-doesnt-work\/\">awesome Evolutionary Parenting website, about why punishment does not work<\/a>, and I also love the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rickhanson.net\/needless-burdens\/\">Rick Hansen &#8230; here is a gift of a piece about letting go of unnecessary burdens<\/a>.\u00a0 Great timing as I work on a piece for my pals at OHbaby!
