{"id":680,"date":"2018-11-20T12:17:45","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T00:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=680"},"modified":"2018-12-10T11:47:57","modified_gmt":"2018-12-09T23:47:57","slug":"its-fledgling-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=680","title":{"rendered":"it&#8217;s fledgling season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/E-reads-Earlybird-e1544399063816.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-684\" alt=\"E reads Earlybird\" src=\"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/E-reads-Earlybird-e1544399063816-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>when I&#8217;m at my sink or at my desk I have views to different bits of lawn.\u00a0 I can hear (I always hear them first cos they are LOUD) and see fledgling birds following their mothers around, and yelling for food.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all I can do to not run out and give the fledglings a lecture.\u00a0 They could find a sweeter tone when they call out, surely.\u00a0 And then I&#8217;ll turn to the mother starling and insist she set some clear limits and encourage fledgling to develop the set of skills that will enable him to fend for himself, some day.<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;ve been thinking about big ol&#8217; fledglings, almost the same size as the parent but so clearly in need of their parents protection.\u00a0 And then LO! and behold I went to a delicious and delightful book launch last night, for a lovely book called EARLYBIRD, by Julie Burgess-Manning with illustrations by Jenny Cooper.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.championcentre.org.nz\/general\/purchase-earlybird\"> You can order your copy HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it is a beautiful picture book for children and families about a Pukeko family whose new egg hatches too soon, the care that egg must receive and the ways that the li&#8217;l Pukeko can (and does) flourish.\u00a0 It will be such a gift for families to support understanding and hope during a really tricky time of life.\u00a0 More and more babies are born prematurely, so lots of families could use a bit of extra support and let&#8217;s just say access to such support is patchy.\u00a0 This book will help.\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.championcentre.org.nz\/who-we-are\/the-champion-centre\">All hail, Champion Centre!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other things that have been happening include a busy week of presenting and a final date for university work, and I foolishly had an expectation of kicking back thereafter.\u00a0 Instead it&#8217;s catching up on appointments, tending to spring time garden, commitments with the kids, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvnz.co.nz\/one-news\/new-zealand\/nz-s-sandwich-generation-caring-children-and-their-own-parents-near-breaking-point\">family stuff<\/a>.\u00a0 Which is all a blessing, to be sure, but sometimes I long to switch lives with my 11 year old nephew.\u00a0 Muck around with a ball, eat, make fart jokes, do the occasional chore, eat, read, and sleep.\u00a0 Oh, and hang out with your mates.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds AMAZING.\u00a0 That pretty much sounds like my dream holiday.\u00a0 Throw in a lounger, some yoga, and cocktail hour, and I am on vay-cay!<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m the Auntie, not the nephew, so I&#8217;d better make the most of it.<\/p>\n<p>Nerding out is one way I do that, so please do join me in a quick link dump before I go make dins for my peeps.<\/p>\n<p>Alright: first up &#8230; I saw another awesome webinar from the <a href=\"https:\/\/screentimenetwork.org\/\">Children&#8217;s Screen Time Action Network<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/screentimenetwork.org\/resource\/technology-and-young-children-dr-nancy-carlsson-paige\">this one features Nancy Carlsson Paige<\/a> and her content is so good &#8230; well, all of them have been good.\u00a0 Check out the archives <a href=\"https:\/\/screentimenetwork.org\/webinar-archive\">HERE.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 Annnnnnnnd, that webinar also served as an announcement for the release of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deyproject.org\/uploads\/1\/5\/5\/7\/15571834\/young_children_in_the_digital_age_final.pdf?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=912231b3-b5fe-445c-b587-9aba0be6170d\">piece of goodness, it&#8217;s Dr Carlsson Paige&#8217;s\u00a0<\/a>Parent&#8217;s Guide to Young Children in the Digital Age: it is both free and wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>Hey: I learned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.nz\/e\/roaring-on-aotearoa-chch-tickets-49375840468\">this event &#8220;Roaring on Aotearoa&#8221; ..
