Hi, it&#8217;s me.\u00a0 Your cool auntie.\u00a0 The one who has been reading &amp; thinking &amp; learning about babies for decades.\u00a0 I only say this because I love you, and I want what&#8217;s best for Neve and therefore her parents and therefore the ever-outward-rippling circles of humanity &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/news\/article.cfm?c_id=1&amp;objectid=12131849\" target=\"_blank\">it&#8217;s cute to quip intimate moments of family life as a contrast to the formality of moving in diplomatic circles<\/a>, but honey, what you did there with your whole &#8220;cute alert: busted watching late-night TV&#8221; thing<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/family-life\/Media\/Pages\/Why-to-Avoid-TV-Before-Age-2.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"> is make a joke about the equivalent of blowing second hand smoke in baby Neve&#8217;s face<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And I know you don&#8217;t mean to do that, and you kinda get a pass because you&#8217;re bearing the brunt of being the cocoon to this precious infant in strange places with uncanny time zones and YOU GO, you&#8217;re doing great.\u00a0 But honey, remind me when I see you, we need to talk about<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edu.gov.on.ca\/childcare\/shanker.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> infant regulation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>People are going to be looking to you, Clarke, as first Dad of Aotearoa, and it&#8217;s not cool to make light of the casual saturation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basw.co.uk\/system\/files\/resources\/disrupted-childhood.pdf\">babies into a digital world which held no regard for their wellbeing, in design nor implementation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You get a pass, you&#8217;re traveling.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve done that, with babes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s tough.\u00a0 Look, we all make comprimises between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phdinparenting.com\/blog\/2010\/1\/14\/childs-hierarchy-of-needs.html\">what we want\/need and what our baby wants\/needs<\/a>, but if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Impact-of-parents-mobile-device-use-on-parent-child-Kildare-Middlemiss\/46a43f4356524e7509cb2e94a6288cd2c3671a4b\">you&#8217;d read what I&#8217;ve been reading about the scale and extent of the potential harm done when parents don&#8217;t limit their digital use in the presence of their children<\/a> &#8211; especially their babies &#8211; you would keep this joke among your close friends, and you&#8217;d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenfreeparenting.com\/five-tips-staying-screen-free-when-the-new-baby-comes\/\" target=\"_blank\">model skilful behaviour<\/a> for the benefit of the watching public.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/parents-smartphone-addiction-linked-to-childrens-behavioral-problems-study-shows_2585806.html\" target=\"_blank\">New parents have to amend their digital habits<\/a>. We don&#8217;t smoke inside the house, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/powerful-ads-show-what-your-child-sees-when-youre-addicted-to-your-phone_us_559fd64be4b096729155ec27\" target=\"_blank\">we don&#8217;t consume digital media like we did before this baby arrived<\/a>.\u00a0 Cool auntie says: Not in our family.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/politics\/107442623\/Kindness-not-fear-or-hate-Jacinda-Arderns-message-to-Donald-Trump-and-the-world\" target=\"_blank\">We are world leaders now, Jacinda has made it so<\/a>.\u00a0 And, Clarke!\u00a0 You are the first Dad of Aotearoa!\u00a0 \u00a0So let&#8217;s be a bit more careful how we talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4f82a008-0096-11e8-9650-9c0ad2d7c5b5\" target=\"_blank\">a habit, in this case the casual consumption of entertainment media, that will be come to be thought of, if not like tobacco<\/a>, like alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>My grandad was given whiskey when he was an infant, he survived.\u00a0 Neve will survive this too!\u00a0 I&#8217;m not giving you a hard time, Clarke.\u00a0 I&#8217;m telling you cos I love yiz.\u00a0 \u00a0Just come over and stay and we can talk all about it.\u00a0 But wait till my dining room repaint is finished, K?\u00a0 xx<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Springtime is lovely in this garden.\u00a0 These past couple of weeks I have spent many blissful minutes under various blossoming trees, eyes closed, breathing deep, smelling sweet smells and hearing the productive meditation that is the buzzing of bees.
