{"id":637,"date":"2018-07-10T13:59:11","date_gmt":"2018-07-10T01:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=637"},"modified":"2018-07-13T20:07:49","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T08:07:49","slug":"school-holidays-best-and-worst-times-of-a-mamas-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=637","title":{"rendered":"school holidays = best and worst times of a mama&#8217;s life!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello my friends,<\/p>\n<p>All is sunny and cold on this bit of my island.\u00a0 We plan a road trip, hubby and gals and I, business mixing with (what I hope will be) some pleasure.\u00a0 I am struggling because I really would rather my kids looked out the window, bickered and grizzled and &#8220;are we there yet?&#8221;-ed, but everyone else &#8211; from the kids themselves to my goodly husband to the lady who waxes my legs &#8211; insists that it&#8217;s oK to use devices on road trips.<\/p>\n<p>Aeroplanes &#8211; fine.\u00a0 But road trips?\u00a0 Through devastatingly beautiful scenery?\u00a0 Aargh &#8230; I cannot find peace around that one.\u00a0 Not today, at least.\u00a0 Ask me tomorrow, 5 hours in to the 6 hour drive.<\/p>\n<p>ANYWAY.\u00a0 Some links for the baby geeks among us.\u00a0 First, some shame and outrage.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impeachthemotherfuckeralready.com\/\">current government of the USA<\/a> just seem determined to be the baddies of the world.\u00a0 Not only did they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/08\/health\/world-health-breastfeeding-ecuador-trump.html\">oppose the WHO&#8217;s resolution to support breastfeeding, they bullied Ecuador<\/a> like a bunch of corporate loving monsters.\u00a0 I want to be loving to all humanity, really I do.\u00a0 But if I had the chance to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.impeachthemotherfuckeralready.com\/\"> poke the 45th prez in the eye<\/a>, I&#8217;d do it.\u00a0 If I could shove his cronies into icy river water, I&#8217;d do it.\u00a0 If I could push him down a flight of stairs, I would.\u00a0 If I&#8217;m doing the pushing, shoving and poking out of love for others, does that make it ethically OK?<\/p>\n<p>NOW, in other news, <a href=\"https:\/\/self-reg.ca\/resources\/\">here is a cornucopia of goodness<\/a> from Stuart Shanker (who I have met, and did not push in a river or poke in the eye, but rather shook his hand) and his Canadian crew.\u00a0 It is <a href=\"https:\/\/self-reg.ca\/resources\/\">a slew of resources about self-regulation<\/a>\u00a0and I think you&#8217;ll love &#8217;em.<\/p>\n<p>Also, a trifecta of resources dealing with the same thing: here is the <a href=\"http:\/\/cep.lse.ac.uk\/pubs\/download\/dp1350.pdf\">original report from the London School of Economic<\/a>s, this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2015\/may\/16\/schools-mobile-phones-academic-results\">an article from the Guardian which summarises the findings,\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>and here is <a href=\"https:\/\/nz.educationhq.com\/news\/49315\/schools-should-ban-mobile-phones-to-improve-students-academic-results-and-mental-wellbeing\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=EducationWeek%20New%20Zealand%20June%2029&amp;utm_content=EducationWeek%20New%20Zealand%20June%2029+CID_2165ce9b48fb2ef2e0aa355091411a9f&amp;utm_source=EducationHQ%20Campaigns&amp;utm_term=Schools%20should%20ban%20mobile%20phones%20to%20improve%20students%20academic%20results%20and%20mental%20wellbeing\">a recent opinion piece <\/a>\u00a0which references them both.\u00a0 What are we dealing with?\u00a0 The case for banning cellphones in schools, and the demonstrated gains in academic performance that would flow from this bravery &#8211; especially for poorer performing students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hms.harvard.edu\/news\/making-mental-health-care-priority?utm_source=Silverpop&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=field_news_item_3&amp;utm_content=HMNews07092018\">This is a piece from the Harvard Medical School<\/a> which celebrates the work of one of their wh\u0101nau, elevating the importance of mental health care (why, yes!) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=br8-qebjIgs\">this is a youtube video in which Stephen Porges&#8217;
