{"id":616,"date":"2018-05-14T14:21:09","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T02:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=616"},"modified":"2018-05-14T14:21:09","modified_gmt":"2018-05-14T02:21:09","slug":"a-wildly-satisfying-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=616","title":{"rendered":"a wildly satisfying life!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s up party people?\u00a0 Kia Ora te wh\u0101nau!<\/p>\n<p>I have just committed an act which could be described as mildly rebellious OR exceptionally sensible, depending upon yer point of view.\u00a0 When I could have (should have?) been hitting the books I was, instead, undulating my spine with the exceptional<a href=\"http:\/\/kellerae.com\/about\/\"> Kelle Rae Oien,\u00a0<\/a>who has been in NZ teaching.\u00a0 How lucky am I!?!\u00a0 Such joy.\u00a0 So sweaty!<\/p>\n<p>I adore her language when she expresses her desire for her students to live lives that are wildly satisfying.\u00a0 Wildly satisfying!\u00a0 I dig that contrast.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like &#8230; passionately content.\u00a0 Enthusiastically calm.\u00a0 Playfully satiated.\u00a0 <em>Wildly satisfying.<\/em>\u00a0 Yeah, imma keep that one!<\/p>\n<p>What else?\u00a0 Just had mother&#8217;s day &#8230; probably a good time to share <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/culture\/features\/a12063822\/emotional-labor-gender-equality\/\" target=\"_blank\">this excellent article from Harper&#8217;s Bazaar about emotional labour<\/a> (aka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyworth.com\/posts\/can-womens-invisible-labor\" target=\"_blank\">invisible labour<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.emmaclit.com\/2017\/05\/20\/you-shouldve-asked\/\" target=\"_blank\">aka mental load<\/a>, aka <a href=\"https:\/\/pickanytwo.net\/the-invisible-burden-that-leaves-moms-drained\/\" target=\"_blank\">kin keeping<\/a>).\u00a0 Oh, young women, study before you procreate!\u00a0 The mental and practical energy that it takes to keep the home fires burning while you&#8217;re committing the audacious act of betterment is something that you cannot possibly know, yet.<\/p>\n<p>Casserole, school trip, reference list.\u00a0 Dishes, flu shots, literature review.\u00a0 Wha &#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>Now, some links.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s clear a few tabs before I do battle with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/EndNoteTraining\" target=\"_blank\">the referencing software<\/a>.\u00a0 I know, I know, that is NOT the attitude.\u00a0 Not doing battle with, playing with!\u00a0 I&#8217;ll play with it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>First &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyway.com\/content\/millenial-parents-are-raising-their-children-in-a-much-different-way\/\" target=\"_blank\">here is an article that freaked me right ou<\/a>t.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about the ways that millennial parents are raising their children.\u00a0 I could weep.\u00a0 The needs of human infants have not changed, just cos our technology has.\u00a0 Interesting that the writer acknowledges the longing that &#8220;parennials&#8221; (millennial parents, apparently) have for simpler times.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/sponsored\/morgan-stanley-2018\/how-well-do-we-understand-the-tech-habits-of-parents\/1775\/?&amp;utm_source=TL_ATL_O_1775_1\" target=\"_blank\">from the Atlantic, another look at the tech habits of parents<\/a>.\u00a0 This deserves multiple and repeated reads, cos I tell you what, it&#8217;ll take you to some terrifying places.\u00a0 Like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/iq\/articles\/the-mobile-state-of-parenthood?ref=wpinsights_rd#more-3013\" target=\"_blank\"> this<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/content\/dam\/corporate\/us\/en\/reports-downloads\/2017-reports\/2016-nielsen-social-media-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And you know the bit that kills me, crazy baby lady that I am?\u00a0 There is this cyclic thing going on, where new motherhood seems &#8220;boring&#8221;, and sure enough the literature points to women going online (eg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0747563216305477\" target=\"_blank\">during the intimate act of breastfeeding<\/a>) because they are bored and seeking distraction.\u00a0 But by succumbing to the distraction, mothers aren&#8217;t practicing SEEING their babies.\u00a0 Really seeing them.\u00a0 And we know that with older kids, the distraction leads to child misbehaviour, which leads to parental dissatisfaction, which makes a<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/cdev.12822\" target=\"_blank\"> big&#8217;ol&#8217; downward spiral of technoference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Boredom? What would happen if we could sit quietly with that, and even l<a href=\"http:\/\/conscious-transitions.com\/the-fullness-of-emptiness\/\" target=\"_blank\">ean into it<\/a>.\u00a0 Incredible things happen when we let ourselves just <em>go with<\/em> the tricky things that motherhood offers us &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/0-16367\/how-motherhood-exhaustion-can-actually-create-beauty-in-your-life.html\" target=\"_blank\">even exhaustion!<\/a>\u00a0 (My struggles with describing invisible labour &#8211; what do those struggles offer me?\u00a0 I&#8217;ll report back!)<\/p>\n<p>I remember when my girls were babies, (1 pre-, 1 post- smartphone) people would confess to being bored\/lonely at home with their infants, and I would think that if they could only see their babies as the <a href=\"http:\/\/alisongopnik.com\/TheScientistInTheCrib.htm\" target=\"_blank\">exceptional scientists<\/a>, sociologists and <a href=\"http:\/\/playcentreshop.co.nz\/index.php?route=product\/product&amp;product_id=1941\" target=\"_blank\">artists<\/a> that they are, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childtrends.org\/child-trends-5\/5-things-to-know-about-early-childhood-home-visiting\/\" target=\"_blank\">if we honoured the power of home visiting<\/a> as transformative in the lives of families, then mamas would be neither bored nor lonely.\u00a0 There is something afoot with our culture that we deny so many people the chance to KNOW babies before they become parents themselves, then we physically isolate new mothers (now with a damaging tool for adult communication\/distraction at their fingertips) and all the while we radically undervalue infants (and therefore parents).<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I gotta get dinner sorted before school pick up.\u00a0 We do a Meat Free Monday, and I try and make it extra delicious, so my omnivorous family won&#8217;t grouse.\u00a0 Also, it&#8217;s swimming lesson day for little girl, so time&#8217;s a-wasting.<\/p>\n<p>Quick round up of the tabs I need to clear &#8230; an article from NZ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/education\/101994384\/my-child-is-not-a-guinea-pig-parents-want-proof-experimental-classrooms-work\" target=\"_blank\">Stuff website about the Modern Learning Experiment<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m far from convinced, especially about the &#8220;screens for all!&#8221; attitude of it all.\u00a0 A couple more things about schools: <a href=\"https:\/\/nz.educationhq.com\/ news\/48185\/sir-ken-speaks-out- our-school-system-crushes-the- will-to-learn\/?utm_medium= email&amp;utm_campaign= EducationWeek%20New%20Zealand% 20May%204&amp;utm_content= EducationWeek%20New%20Zealand% 20May%204+CID_ b44518df3f924ced30e07c2e7b2ac4 d4&amp;utm_source=EducationHQ% 20Campaigns&amp;utm_term=Sir% 20Ken%20speaks%20out%20our% 20school%20system%20crushes% 20the%20will%20to%20learn\" target=\"_blank\">this from Sir Ken Robinson<\/a> (oh, hell yes!\u00a0 Dance is as important as mathematics!) and I would also like to share a quote that has been rocking my world:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1>\u201cWe\u2019ve bought into the idea that education is about training and \u201csuccess\u201d, defined monetarily, rather than learning to think critically and to challenge.
