{"id":603,"date":"2018-03-20T10:24:33","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T22:24:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=603"},"modified":"2018-03-20T10:24:33","modified_gmt":"2018-03-19T22:24:33","slug":"the-stress-of-abundance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=603","title":{"rendered":"the stress of abundance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kia ora te wh\u0101nau.\u00a0 What&#8217;s up?<\/p>\n<p>This time of the year is achingly beautiful &#8230; clear, calm blue skies and leaves just beginning to colour.\u00a0 But holy ravioli I feel the pressure to make good use of the masses of fruit and produce.\u00a0 Corn, beets, peaches, apples, beans, tomatoes, pears, zucchini (aka courgettes).\u00a0 All that.\u00a0 I&#8217;m cooking and gifting and breathing deep.<\/p>\n<p>The gorgeousness is tinged with the awareness that winter is gearing up, which makes these indoor jobs more difficult.\u00a0 Office &#8211; as much as I love you, I just long to be pottering outside with the sun on my back!\u00a0 Weeding, watering, hanging washing.\u00a0 Whatever.<\/p>\n<p>Soon enough, self.\u00a0 Soon enough.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, let me throw some links your way.\u00a0 See what speaks to you, where your head&#8217;s at.\u00a0 Mine has been expanding &#8211; creaking and groaning as I ask it to perform new and different tasks.\u00a0 After years perfecting speedy task-switching (tending to the interruptions of childhood and honing skills of responding to everchanging needs) I&#8217;ve been attempting to sit quietly and think deeply.\u00a0 IT IS HAAAAAAARD.<\/p>\n<p>So what a treat to end this posting moment with a flurry of quick thoughts (this is a comfy place!)<\/p>\n<p>First up &#8211; I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve shared this<a href=\"https:\/\/screentimenetwork.org\/resource\/screen-time-not-luxury-issue-webinar-professionals-who-work-families-across-socioeconomic\" target=\"_blank\"> yet.\u00a0 It is excellent viewing, well worth your time.\u00a0 It&#8217;s another webinar from the fine folk at the Children&#8217;s Screen Time Action Network,<\/a> this one calling attention to the way that the burden of tech overuse seems to sit disproportionately on the shoulders of families at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum.\u00a0 OUCH.<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2016\/04\/25\/stop-telling-kids-youre-bad-at-math-you-are-spreading-math-anxiety-like-a-virus\/?utm_term=.01d4aca23163\" target=\"_blank\">an article from the Washington Post urging us to stop spreading Math Anxiety.\u00a0<\/a> Speak your love numbers and all the dances they perform!<\/p>\n<p>This is interesting, f<a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2018\/conversation-boost-childrens-brain-response-language-0214#.Wosk8t5JmMo.linkedin\" target=\"_blank\">rom MIT.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an indepth look at language development and the researchers use brain scans to draw attention to the ways that interactional back-and-forth is the true gold<\/a>, in terms of early development and trajectory setting, it&#8217;s not just the number of words a kid hears.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve spent years admiring that important research re: word count, and this adds nicely to it.\u00a0 Cool.<\/p>\n<p>A little family of alarming tech things, now.\u00a0 First, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@richardnfreed\/the-tech-industrys-psychological-war-on-kids-c452870464ce\" target=\"_blank\">a piece from Richard Freed about the tech industry&#8217;s psychological war on kids<\/a>, next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1843magazine.com\/features\/the-scientists-who-make-apps-addictive\" target=\"_blank\">an expansion on one of the ideas therein, about the science of persuasion in app design<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/technology\/digital-living\/101970882\/phones-have-ruined-our-ability-to-think-straight\" target=\"_blank\">finally an article from Stuff to put it all in a real-life, actual-human context<\/a> (thanks Stats Geek).<\/p>\n<p>And I end with a massive gift &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2017\/04\/over-nearly-80-years-harvard-study-has-been-showing-how-to-live-a-healthy-and-happy-life\/\" target=\"_blank\">the coolest and most inspiring thing I&#8217;ve read in a while, about a longitudinal adult health study at Harvard<\/a>.\u00a0 &#8220;Good genes are nice, but joy is better&#8221;.\u00a0 Oh, hell yes!!\u00a0 x x x<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kia ora te wh\u0101nau.\u00a0 What&#8217;s up?
