I&#8217;ve made it out into my glorious office and photographed the OHbaby! mag which houses my article about Technoference.\u00a0 Oh, friends and gentlegeeks, if money (and courage!) were limitless I&#8217;d rush off to Rome for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waimh2018.org\/622-2\/\">World Infant Mental Health Congress in May next year.\u00a0 Just to hear Jenny Radesky and her &#8220;Digital Media in the Dyad<\/a>&#8221; prez.\u00a0 Swoon!<\/p>\n<p>But alas &#8230; I&#8217;m neither rich enough NOR am I sufficiently brave.\u00a0 Travel often feels pretty daunting.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohbaby.co.nz\/parenting\/motherhood-and-the-business-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\">I managed a trip to Canada last year,<\/a> communing with other disciples of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vkJwFRAwDNE\" target=\"_blank\">the Gospel according to Bruce.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But a foreign language, another whole continent away?\u00a0 For a New Zealander to even think about Rome you&#8217;d have to pad it with ages either side, to justify the costs.\u00a0 Both the monetary expense and the time.\u00a0 Uproot the whole family for a good month.\u00a0 Spend as much as it&#8217;s going to cost to fix the laundry\/kitchen conundrum.<\/p>\n<p>Too much, too soon for this geek.<\/p>\n<p>Ah &#8230; a wise local recently reminded me: for everything there is a season, etc.<\/p>\n<p>For today, I&#8217;ll stay home with an ailing teen and tend to some office time.<\/p>\n<p>First &#8230; may I share some links?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll start with some light reading for the nerdily inclined &#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/135\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\">a paper published by the American Academy of Pediatrics.\u00a0 It&#8217;s by Jenny Radesky and others<\/a>, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/oct\/05\/smartphone-addiction-silicon-valley-dystopia\" target=\"_blank\">an awesome longread article by the Guardian about smartphone addiction <\/a>&#8230; the dude who invented the &#8220;Like&#8221; button and his peers all send their kids to schools without screens.<\/p>\n<p>Mark my bloody words:\u00a0 To learn to think creatively enough to be able to build such immensely complex and innovative things as iPads and apps and pull-down refresh functions. &#8230; you gotta have a childhood full of relational richness and hands-on play.\u00a0 Nature and sunshine and eye contact.\u00a0 Opportunities to lose yourself in discovery and enjoyment.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/nov\/06\/fears-children-addicted-online-games\" target=\"_blank\">what are we like?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/10\/07\/the-secret-lives-of-children-and-their-phones.html\" target=\"_blank\">What are we actually like<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Honestly,<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.dscout.com\/mobile-touches\" target=\"_blank\"> I could go on all day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Between the angsting about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/behindtheheadlines\/news\/2017-05-31-parents-phone-addiction-may-lead-to-child-behavioural-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\">technoference\u00a0<\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethesdamagazine.com\/Bethesda-Magazine\/September-October-2017\/Addicted\/index.php?cparticle=1&amp;siarticle=0#artanc\" target=\"_blank\">think of the children!<\/a>\u00a0 And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/may\/01\/facebook-advertising-data-insecure-teens\" target=\"_blank\">not just to sell stuff to them<\/a>!)\u00a0 and the all the coveting I&#8217;ve been doing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allbirds.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">WANT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theoldtry.com\/collections\/tennessee?page=6\" target=\"_blank\">WANT<\/a>) I&#8217;ve barely had time for much else.\u00a0 School holidays are over, of course, which changes things a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of schools, there&#8217;s been another conversation about teaching values\/life skills (dare I say it!\u00a0 Social and emotional intelligence stuff!) in the classroom.\u00a0 I&#8217;m kinda all for it, but remind us all that amazing things like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rootsofempathy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roots of Empathy<\/a>, and the<a href=\"https:\/\/nurturegroups.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Nurture Groups<\/a>, and other cool things exist.\u00a0 We can call on existing ideas with evidence based results.\u00a0 We can do better than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/education\/90983510\/Teachers-struggle-with-modern-learning-environments\" target=\"_blank\">dodgy posture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nz.educationhq.com\/news\/43086\/nz-students-self-harming-in-droves-study\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=EducationWeek%20New%20Zealand%20Oct%2013&amp;utm_content=EducationWeek%20New%20Zealand%20Oct%2013+CID_e0be888b6f7880fc2964f34703a017c2&amp;utm_source=EducationHQ%20Campaigns&amp;utm_term=NZ%20students%20self-harming%20in%20droves%20study\" target=\"_blank\">other forms of self harm<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0We can find ways to heal.<\/p>\n<p>We bloody well ought to.\u00a0 Digital focus, my eye.<\/p>\n<p>Life, eh!\u00a0 \u00a0What, ho!\u00a0 What a ride.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>at last &#8230;
