{"id":539,"date":"2017-05-23T10:06:26","date_gmt":"2017-05-22T22:06:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=539"},"modified":"2017-05-23T10:06:26","modified_gmt":"2017-05-22T22:06:26","slug":"fetch-wood-carry-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=539","title":{"rendered":"fetch wood, carry water."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Geeks!<\/p>\n<p>When it all gets a bit much, I like to try and get back to basics. \u00a0And last week I heard the most beautiful summation of this need. \u00a0You probably already know it: Fetch wood, carry water.<\/p>\n<p>It cuts through the busy-ness and the monkey mind and reminds us what is needed, here: today. \u00a0It also reminds me that sometimes even my calls for simplicity are too complex! \u00a0This is my t-shirt slogan of the week. \u00a0And it will inform my activities today, firewood being a vital part of my daily routines at this time of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Before I head out and stack wood (*message to self: wear work gloves! \u00a0Why flirt with acquiring more splinters in my fingers &#8230; I&#8217;m currently nursing one on the ring finger of my right hand &#8230; OH how painful the o&#8217;s!) I will share a bunch of links with my fellow geeks. \u00a0Strangely, this serves to simplify my thinking. \u00a0It clears my desktops, literally and figuratively.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alifeinprogress.ca\/want-mediocre-life\/\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s a lovely blog post about simplifying &#8230; it&#8217;s about satisfaction with a mediocre life<\/a> (which doesn&#8217;t actually seem all that mediocre!)<\/p>\n<p>Paradoxically now: some coveting. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shopxyloba.com\/Basic-Kits_c15.htm\">Check this out &#8230; it&#8217;s a marble run that makes music<\/a>. \u00a0Want!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/babyinmind.org.au\/four-books-to-relieve-parenting-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\">This is a post from the Australian organisation called &#8220;baby in mind&#8221; and it is a list of books<\/a> they recommend as relieving parenting anxiety. \u00a0LOVE!<\/p>\n<p>Something completely different: <a href=\"http:\/\/hazlitt.net\/longreads\/snarling-girl\" target=\"_blank\">a long essay by the amazing Elisa Albert (who wrote the mind-blowing After Birth) and this is about ambition.<\/a> \u00a0It kicked my bum, a wee bit.<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mothering.com\/articles\/today-harsh-parenting-may-backfire-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\">a reminder from Mothering magazine, that harsh parenting will lead to worse behaviour from kids<\/a>, later. \u00a0Even the picture breaks my heart a wee bit. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7FC4qRD1vn8\" target=\"_blank\">And here is a splendid resouce that might break your heart a wee bit, too. \u00a0It&#8217;s a teaching video <\/a>from the University of Washington&#8217;s iLab, thanks be to Jean Clinton for sharing it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/dear-husband-suck-it-up-this-is-the-easiest-life_us_58a27371e4b0cd37efcfeca3\" target=\"_blank\">Here is an open letter to husbands from the Huffington Post<\/a> &#8211; there is a break coming when you&#8217;re 67 &#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/most-adults-spend-more-time-on-their-digital-devices-than-they-think\/\" target=\"_blank\">THIS from Scientific American reminds us that most adults are spending more time on their digital devices than they think<\/a> (want your kids to unplug? \u00a0Do it your damn self!!) \u00a0Super important, y&#8217;all. \u00a0Here is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/toddlers-touchscreens-poor-sleep-patterns-three-quarters-day-disrupt-smartphones-a7682136.html\" target=\"_blank\">an article from the Independent in the UK linking toddler&#8217;s poor sleep patterns to touchscreen devices<\/a>. \u00a0Holy ding dong. \u00a0What the heck?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"www.rookiemag.com \" target=\"_blank\">This is a gorgeous online magazine made by teen girls for teen girls &#8230; Rookie<\/a>. \u00a0Enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>I think that&#8217;ll do for now. \u00a0Time for some wood stacking. \u00a0And gratitude for functional indoor plumbing, so that the second half of the &#8220;Fetch Wood Carry Water&#8221; mantra is theoretical only.<\/p>\n<p>xxx<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Geeks!
