{"id":465,"date":"2016-09-05T08:24:51","date_gmt":"2016-09-04T20:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=465"},"modified":"2016-09-09T16:50:56","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T04:50:56","slug":"life-after-the-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=465","title":{"rendered":"life after the Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/220px-Daisy_chain.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"220px-Daisy_chain\" src=\"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/220px-Daisy_chain-150x75.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a>we are fans of the Olympic games, in this house. \u00a0It&#8217;s one of the only times that our rigid &#8220;No TV in the mornings&#8221; rule gets bent.<\/p>\n<p>Little Girl and I have had several re-enactments of races, victories, and awards ceremonies. \u00a0She likes to gaze reverentially at an imaginary flag being raised, and has a warm way of congratulating other imaginary competitors on their good runs.<\/p>\n<p>The weird bit is how she&#8217;s turning everything into competition, now. \u00a0An example, from yesterday, as she&#8217;s gathering daisies off the lawn: &#8220;Pretend I won the flower-picking competition!&#8221; \u00a0Flower picking as competitive event? \u00a0Break my heart! \u00a0Go on!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not a particularly competitive person, so my instinct is to detract from this trait. \u00a0One beautiful strategy for turning away from rampant competition is to embrace the wonderful world of yoga. \u00a0I&#8217;m on my mat several times a week, and will feel more competent in supporting my kids to enjoy their bodies and their own practice having had the great fortune to attend a day of training with the beautiful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yogikids.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michaela from Yogi Kids.<\/a> \u00a0Namaste (now let&#8217;s play!)<\/p>\n<p>What else? \u00a0A flurry of important, informative and slightly depressing links from Australia. \u00a0First, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/earlytraumagrief.anu.edu.au\/files\/Stepping%20Up%20for%20Kids%20booklet.pdf\">Early Trauma and Grief Network, an excellent PDF<\/a> about supporting children who have witnessed family violence. \u00a0I&#8217;ve linked to it before, but I&#8217;m linking to it again because it worthy: it dispels some myths and is altogether excellent. \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifespan.org.au\/\">This is a link to the website of an organisation<\/a>\u00a0called Lifespan whose mission is to prevent suicide, and please behold this (important! \u00a0Slightly depressing!) from the <a href=\"http:\/\/valuingchildreninitiative.com.au\/2016\/08\/10\/what-the-public-thinks\/\">Valuing Children Initiative &#8230; it&#8217;s about public perception of children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is an important li&#8217;l piece <a href=\"http:\/\/diversityinsteam.com\/steam-bites\/why-the-a-in-steam-matters\/\">written by a Scientist &#8230; it&#8217;s about keeping the &#8216;A&#8217; in STEAM<\/a> (instead of narrowly obsessing about STEM).<\/p>\n<p>This is a report from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/reports\/0001\/01\/01\/solving-social-ills-through-early-childhood-home-visiting\">Pew Charitable Trust, summarising vast amounts of information about the efficacy and awesomeness of Home Visiting<\/a> (unnecessary captials, I know! \u00a0But I flippin love home visiting). \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.midwife.org.nz\/women-in-new-zealand\/about-lead-maternity-carer-lmc-services\">Kiwi Midwives do some home visits<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plunket.org.nz\/what-we-do\/what-we-offer\/plunket-visits\/\">Plunket do a little<\/a> (and used to do more) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/news\/political\/304311\/funds-cut-from-parents-as-teachers-scheme\">Parents as First Teachers (PAFT) have just tragically had their funding cut!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of gifts from Scientific American, and then I gotta go be an attentive parent once more. \u00a0First: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/sa-visual\/data-visualization-and-feelings\/?WT.mc_id=SA_MB_20160817\">Data Visualization and Feelings<\/a> (I feel that I flippin love this, so what does that look like?) and finally, here is neuroimaging exploring what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/mind-aglow-scientists-watch-thoughts-form-in-the-brain\/?WT.mc_id=SA_MB_20160824\">new thoughts look like<\/a> as they take shape in the brain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>we are fans of the Olympic games, in this house. \u00a0It&#8217;s one of the only times that our rigid &#8220;No TV in the mornings&#8221; rule gets bent.
