{"id":428,"date":"2016-05-16T09:34:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-15T21:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=428"},"modified":"2016-05-16T09:38:14","modified_gmt":"2016-05-15T21:38:14","slug":"kia-ora-to-the-early-years-network-here-are-some-links-for-yall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/baby.geek.nz\/?p=428","title":{"rendered":"Kia Ora to the Early Years Network &#8230; here are some links for y&#8217;all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I was lucky enough to hang out with a large group of caring, passionate &amp; wise teachers. \u00a0An intersectorial party of sorts, with Early Childhood teachers and Primary school teachers all buzzing together in the name of smoothing children&#8217;s transition from EC to school.<\/p>\n<p>Hautupua!<\/p>\n<p>And despite our squishy time frame and our tiny chairs, we generated an atmosphere that was kinda palpable. \u00a0All things going well, e hoa ma, we are going to get to have another go! \u00a0 Maybe two. \u00a0Because goodness knows there is plenty more to discuss. \u00a0Meanwhile, as promised, some links:<\/p>\n<p>First up, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.govt.nz\/assets\/Documents\/Ministry\/consultations\/Report-of-the-Advisory-Group-on-Early-Learning.pdf\">here is a link to the big ol&#8217; report <\/a>from the Advisory Group on Early Learning, commissioned by the Ministry of Education. \u00a0It includes the list of &#8220;crucial&#8221; factors that we unpacked just a wee bit.<\/p>\n<p>Next, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rch.org.au\/uploadedFiles\/Main\/Content\/ccch\/CPR_Vol14No3_PS_SchlRead.pdf\">a lovely one-pager <\/a>about school readiness\u00a0from the Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>And a few tangentially linked links. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/ideas\/all-in-the-family-part-2-1.3532422\">This will take you<\/a> to an excellent episode from the show &#8220;Ideas&#8221; from the Canadian Broadcasting Company. \u00a0It&#8217;s about trauma-informed discipline in schools and it does a great job of explaining key concepts we could all do with considering, even though their children are high schoolers. \u00a0Pop your laptop (or pad, or phone) near you as you fold laundry, make dinner, or do dishes. \u00a0But don&#8217;t drop it in the sink.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.truceteachers.org\/\">This link is going to whisk you to the website of Truce Teachers<\/a>. \u00a0TRUCE = Teachers Resisting Unhealthy Children&#8217;s Entertainment. \u00a0Ideas for bumping up the amount of free play in children&#8217;s lives. \u00a0Enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/populardemocracy.org\/news\/publications\/community-schools-transforming-struggling-schools-thriving-schools\">Here is a report from the advocacy group The Center for Popular Democracy,<\/a> it tells the story of transforming struggling schools into thriving schools. \u00a0Interesting. \u00a0(hint: it&#8217;s not about giant groups of kids or rampant testing!) and for dessert, <a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-12-18\/mindfulness-relaxation-trial-records-overwhelming-benefits\/7039114\">an article from the Australian media<\/a> about a mindfulness programme that was piloted in schools. \u00a0No prizes for guessing the outcome &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Now, bearing in mind that we&#8217;ll have the chance to meet again, I&#8217;m happy to send you a copy of the slides (Just leave me a comment below and I&#8217;ll email you a handout) BUT I very well might use those same slides as the starting point for our conversation next time. \u00a0K?
