Any questions?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have had a baffling few weeks as a baby geek and a toddler person and an educator and a mama and a professional and a slave(!).<\/p>\n<p>Long and short of it: we (people who are kaiako\/educators for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainwave.org.nz\/\">Brainwave Trust)<\/a> had been invited to update our profiles on the website. \u00a0I got a snazzy new photo and was keen to rejig the text, which boldly stated that I was on maternity leave, caring for the child born in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s true. \u00a0I am.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m glad to. \u00a0Happy to. \u00a0Privileged to. \u00a0Proud to!<\/p>\n<p>So why was my motivation in updating said profile the removal of those words? \u00a0Just what it is it about being a FULL TIME STAY AT HOME MOTHER that made me want to massage that truth and call it something else?<\/p>\n<p>Cos yeah, freelance writer. \u00a0And yeah, doing postgrad study. \u00a0But oh, HELL yeah &#8211; I&#8217;m a mother. \u00a0I&#8217;m the keeper of the castle and I care for my kids. \u00a0So why, even amidst the most pro-family and child friendly of colleagues, do I find it necessary to deny that title?<\/p>\n<p>Full time parent. \u00a0That&#8217;s me.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, three years on. \u00a0Yes, at least until she starts school. \u00a0So there.<\/p>\n<p>But I chickened out. \u00a0Not only rejigged text but made the decision to pull my profile down altogether, cos it&#8217;s gonna be years until I can offer to help anyone! \u00a0But quick, before it gets removed, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainwave.org.nz\/regions\/north-canterbury\/\">check out my fancy new photo!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not all. \u00a0I had a gig booked, my first for ages. \u00a0I was thoroughly looking forward to it, had learned new tricks in Keynote. \u00a0Great client, juicy content. \u00a0Lovin&#8217; life. \u00a0But then, little girl was sick. \u00a0Little girl was sick and husband was not in a position to cancel his life.<\/p>\n<p>So guess what? \u00a0I canceled. \u00a0Gutting for me, but the right thing to do. \u00a0Cos when you&#8217;re three years old with a raging temperature and strep throat, what you need is your mum.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah!<\/p>\n<p>Quickly now, cos it&#8217;s what we do on this website, I will now throw a variety of links into your lap: THIS is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsinthehouse.com\/\">Kids in the House<\/a>, which is a parenting website like no other! \u00a0Enjoy. \u00a0I&#8217;d love to share this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mothering.com\/articles\/please-stop-commenting-body\">excellent bit o&#8217; writing from Mothering about a new mother&#8217;s body belonging to HER<\/a>. \u00a0And it&#8217;s been a while since I sent y&#8217;all to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rch.org.au\/ccch\/resources_and_publications\/Policy_Brief_Archives\/\"> this glorious collection<\/a>, but this is a variety of Policy Briefs from the Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital in Melbourne. \u00a0It&#8217;s fab.<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2015\/01\/27\/infant-temperaments-may-reflect-parents-cultural-values\/#.VT3t7GSqqko\">here&#8217;s an interesting piece about infant temperament and culture<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/azftf.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\">here is a website from Arizona<\/a> all about their initiatives to support family. \u00a0Next, a<a href=\"http:\/\/jeanhailes.org.au\/what-were-we-thinking\/\"> gift for new families<\/a> about settling babies. \u00a0Yum.<\/p>\n<p>Compare s<a href=\"http:\/\/psychcentral.com\/news\/2014\/06\/19\/weighing-effects-of-lots-of-structure-vs-free-range-parenting\/71420.html\">tructured parenting with Free Range parenting here<\/a>, and here is a very good thang f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/04\/20\/anti-poverty-programs_n_7087622.html\">rom the Huffington Post about the power of home visiting programmes<\/a> for changing outcomes for kids in poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it may or it might not be the best kindergarten you&#8217;ve ever seen, but t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/takaharu_tezuka_the_best_kindergarten_you_ve_ever_seen\">his is an inspiring TED talk<\/a> all the same.<\/p>\n<p>Big shout out of thanks and support to Jo, who organised the workshop I had to cancel, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NathanMikaereWallis\">brother Nate <\/a>for always listening, and also to <a href=\"http:\/\/penniebrownlee.weebly.com\/blog\">Pennie<\/a>, who continues to be so flippin supportive of me, at home with my kids.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have had a baffling few weeks as a baby geek and a toddler person and an educator and a mama and a professional and a slave(!).
