this is true, and yet this is too

So much to share with y’all today.  Quickly, while Baby Girl naps and before my caffeine rush wears off.

I’ve been feeling mildly confused lately, like my head is bouncing from one reality to another.

So, one of the ways the geekiness manifests itself is via podcasts.  I love Radiolab from WNYC, and I was listening to a wee back episode t’other night ... it is Desperately Seeking Symmetry and it is gooooood.  Next thing you know I am contemplating neutrons and antineutrons, protons and antiprotons, and the formation of the universe.

I love that tunnel of thinking, the esoteric and contemplative and cool.  And it is true that the universe is miraculous and life is miraculous and we are miraculous ... BUT IT IS ALSO TRUE that the fridge could use a wipe out.  One reality to another ... And that someone needs to hang that load of facecloths on the washing line.  And change the baby’s nappy.  And ...

And someone needs to share this slew of wicked links with the geeks and the friends out there.  Thanks to all y’all who have been passing stuff along to share with the rest of yiz.

OK. Some sleep stuff to begin.  Cos mine is not the only home wondering how to catch some more zzzz’s.  Here is a v good blog post exploring the idea that self-soothing is a lie.  And a piece from Psychology Today about the same research, and another is here.

And it’s true: I can’t help but think we evolved the way we did cos we nestled our little baby apes in our arms.  Now read this excellent article about the childhood experience of humans and how it is that which means we’re the winningest apes.

Then follow it up: here is a great post about the value of hunter-gatherer parenting, and here is a wee something about how we just might be messing with our babies’ brains with some of our loopy modern habits.

Luckily, there are a ton of folks out there reminding us of the value of parenting with simplicity, and it is super true that children need very little but nature, play, and love in order to thrive (here is a lovely video clip from India about such things - but be careful of the loud noise to begin, adjust your speakers!).  But it is also true that there are many ways to honour the vital role of play in children’s lives ... and I happen to love blocks.  Here I go again, from one reality to another!  I happen to love beautiful blogs full of inspiringly gorgeous things to make and do with kids.

Great piece of writing about motherhood can be found here

Baby is up, computer battery level is down.  Time to cease.  xxx
